Purpose of the Votes
Health care employees in Manitoba are currently included in over 190 bargaining units and represented by 13 different unions. The Health Sector Bargaining Unit Review Act reduces the number of bargaining units to 36.
A new bargaining unit will include employees who are currently in various bargaining units and represented by different unions (in some cases, up to 8 unions). The voting process allows unionized employees in each new bargaining unit to determine which union will represent all of the employees in that new bargaining unit in the future. Employees will continue to be covered by their existing collective agreements regardless of which union wins the vote. The existing agreements will apply until a new collective agreements is negotiated by the union and employer for that new bargaining unit.
Timing of the Votes
The Voting Period will begin at 12:00 noon on August 8, 2019 and will end at exactly 12:00 noon on August 22, 2019. It will not be possible to cast a vote after that time.
MNP LLP has been contracted as the Electoral Officer to conduct the representation votes. Eligible employees will be able to vote electronically - using any internet enabled device or by phone. During the Voting Period, employees will be able to vote 24 hours a day. Both voting options will allow employees to vote in English or French.
A Voter Help Desk will be available to assist employees should they experience any voting difficulties. The Voter Help Desk opens on July 30, 2019: 1-888-281-8683.
The Electoral Officer will provide each voter with detailed voting instructions and a Personal Identification Number (PIN) to access the voting system. This information will be delivered to employees' home addresses between July 25 and August 6, 2019. Employees who have not received this information from the Electoral Officer by August 6 should contact the Voter Help Desk.
